How to Make a Small Room Look Bigger, Brighter & More Open
A small room doesn’t have to feel small.
The right color palette, furniture choices, lighting, and a little cluttering can completely change how spacious a room feels—without knocking down a single wall.
One of my favorite tricks is using light colors as the foundation of the room and then layering in coordinating accent colors. You can still have plenty of personality and color without making the space feel crowded or dark.
Here are some simple ways to make a smaller room feel lighter, brighter, and much more open.
1. Start With Light Colors
Color can completely change the way you experience a room.
Light walls, rugs, curtains, and larger furniture pieces help create a brighter, more open feeling because they allow natural and artificial light to move around the space instead of visually weighing it down.
But that does not mean your entire room has to be white or beige.
Try starting with a light foundation such as:
- Warm white
- Cream
- Soft beige
- Pale gray
- Light blue
- Soft aqua
- Pale sage
Then add richer accent colors through pillows, artwork, flowers, and accessories.

For example, a beautiful combination could be:
Cream + Soft Aqua + Teal + Golden Yellow + Small Touches of Burnt Orange
The cream keeps the room feeling light and open, while the teal, yellow, and orange add personality and warmth.
Natural wood furniture also works beautifully with this type of palette because it adds warmth without making the room feel heavy.
Oh Lala Tip: Keep your largest surfaces light—walls, sofa, curtains, and sometimes the rug—then bring in stronger colors through smaller décor pieces that are easy to change.
2. Too Much Furniture
One of the quickest ways to overwhelm a room is by filling every corner with furniture.
Just because something fits doesn’t mean it belongs there.
Removing one unnecessary chair, table, cabinet, or accent piece can instantly make a room feel more open while improving traffic flow.
You also don’t need a piece of furniture filling every empty wall.
Sometimes a little empty space is exactly what makes a room feel finished.
Oh Lala Tip: Less furniture often creates a more luxurious, designer-inspired look.
3. Over-sized Furniture
That over-sized sectional may be comfortable, but if it dominates the room, it can make the entire space feel cramped.
Choose furniture that fits the scale of your room.
A smaller sofa paired with one accent chair may work better than a huge sectional and several additional chairs.
Furniture with exposed legs is another great choice because being able to see more of the floor underneath the furniture creates a lighter visual appearance.
For smaller rooms, look for:
- Sofas with visible legs
- Open-base coffee tables
- Slim side tables
- Accent chairs with smaller profiles
- Furniture that serves more than one purpose
4. Cluttered Countertops
Kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, dressers, coffee tables, and desks easily become catch-all spaces.
Even in a clean home, crowded surfaces create visual clutter.
Keep only the items you use regularly on display and store the rest away.
A mostly clear countertop immediately gives your eyes somewhere to rest and helps the entire room feel calmer and more spacious.
5. Too Many Small Decorative Items
Small décor is easy to collect.
Before long, there are candles, figurines, frames, bowls, signs, plants, and accessories covering every available surface.
Instead of displaying dozens of tiny pieces, choose a few items that have more visual impact.
You can also group several smaller items together rather than scattering them around the entire room.
Try decorating with:
- One larger vase
- A beautiful lamp
- One piece of statement artwork
- A small stack of books
- One decorative bowl or tray
- A few coordinating pillows
Your room will still feel decorated—but much less busy.
6. Blocking Natural Light
Natural light is one of the easiest—and completely free—ways to make your home feel bigger.
Heavy curtains, dark drapes, and constantly closed blinds can make even a good-sized room feel darker and more enclosed.
Whenever possible:
- Open your curtains.
- Choose light-colored window treatments.
- Hang curtains so they don’t cover unnecessary portions of the window.
- Keep windows clean.
- Let as much sunshine into the room as possible.
White, cream, or light linen-look curtains are especially beautiful in smaller spaces because they soften the room without visually closing it in.
A brighter room almost always feels more spacious.
7. Furniture Covering Windows
Large furniture placed directly in front of windows blocks valuable natural light.
If possible, move sofas, bookcases, tall chairs, and cabinets away from your windows.
Even shifting a piece of furniture a few feet may allow considerably more light into the room.
If furniture must sit near a window, choose pieces with a lower profile so the window remains as open as possible.
8. Overloaded Shelves
Open shelving can look beautiful when it is styled thoughtfully.
But when every inch of every shelf is filled, the entire room starts feeling crowded.
Leave some empty space around your décor.
That empty space—or visual “breathing room”—is part of the design.
Instead of filling a shelf from one end to the other, try displaying:
- A few books
- One decorative object
- A small plant
- A framed photo
- A basket
Then stop.
You do not have to fill every available inch.
9. Too Much on the Floor
The more flooring you can see, the larger a room tends to feel.
Laundry baskets, storage bins, shoes, pet supplies, cords, bags, toys, and miscellaneous piles quickly shrink the appearance of a space.
Look for ways to move everyday clutter off the floor.
Try:
- Decorative storage baskets
- Storage ottomans One of my favorites is this one
- Cabinets with doors
- Under-bed storage This 4 pack is high-rated and affordable!! HERE
- Furniture with drawers
- Wall-mounted storage
- Entryway shoe cabinets – For some amazing picks click HERE
Keeping the floor visually open can make a surprisingly big difference.

10. An Inefficient Furniture Layout
Many people automatically push every piece of furniture against the walls.
That isn’t always the arrangement that makes a room feel largest.
Experiment.
Move a chair.
Angle a piece differently.
Create a clear walkway.
Try centering furniture around a conversation area rather than around the outside edges of the room.
You want your eye—and your body—to be able to move easily through the space.
Sometimes moving just one sofa or chair completely changes the room.
11. Holding On to Too Much Stuff
This may be the biggest space-stealer of all.
No decorating trick can completely overcome excessive clutter.
If every drawer, cabinet, closet, shelf, and tabletop is overflowing, your home will naturally begin to feel smaller.
Start with one area instead of trying to tackle your entire house at once.
Ask yourself:
Do I use it? Do I love it? Does it need to be in this room?
If the answer is no, consider donating, selling, relocating, or discarding it.
Decluttering costs nothing and can make your home feel dramatically different.
Remember: less really can be more.
The Secret Is Creating Visual Breathing Room
Making a small room feel larger isn’t about removing every bit of color or personality.
It’s about creating balance.
Start with a light, airy foundation, allow plenty of natural light into the room, choose furniture that fits the space, and keep clutter under control.
Then add your personality with coordinating colors.
A room with light cream walls, a cream sofa, soft aqua accents, deeper teal pillows, warm yellow accessories, a touch of orange, and natural wood can still be colorful while feeling bright and open.
You get the best of both worlds:
Color without clutter.
Personality without heaviness.
Style without making the room feel smaller.
Final Thoughts🤯
Creating a home that feels spacious isn’t about buying a larger house—it’s about making the most of the one you already have.
Light colors, thoughtful furniture placement, natural light, less clutter, and carefully chosen accessories can completely transform the way a room feels.
And the best part?
Many of these changes cost little to nothing.
