Organize Your Entire Kitchen Without Buying a Thing (12/19/2025)

⚪A Fresh Start: Empty Every Shelf and Drawer The very first thing I always do when I’m organizing a kitchen is empty every drawer and cabinet. It might look a little wild at first, but once everything is out in the open, it becomes so much easier to really see what you own. And honestly, it’s amazing how quickly you realize what you actually use and what you’re ready to let go of.
Pull everything off the shelves and make sure each drawer and cabinet is completely cleared out. Yes, it’s a lot—but when the goal is to organize the whole kitchen, having a full picture of what you own makes all the difference.
Starting with a blank, empty space helps you imagine how you want things to look and function. You’re no longer stuck with whatever system you had before—you get to rethink the whole setup in a way that works better for you.
As you’re clearing things out, start grouping similar items together. Put all the kitchen gadgets in one spot, cooking utensils in another, and so on. It makes the next steps so much easier.
And don’t forget the cups, glasses, and plates. Take those out too—you might discover they make more sense in a completely different spot than where you’ve always kept them.

🧹Do a Full Kitchen Gadget Sweep
Now comes the fun part… decluttering the kitchen! I know it might sound a little crazy to call this fun, but it honestly can be. Stick with me. If you didn’t already sort things while emptying your cabinets, start by grouping everything into simple categories like:

  • Plates and bowls
  • Cups, glasses, and water bottles
  • Baking items
  • Kitchen gadgets
  • Cooking utensils
  • Pots and pans
  • Serve ware
  • Spices
  • Pantry items
Once everything is sorted, go through each category one at a time and decide what actually deserves a spot in your kitchen. This is where it starts to feel a bit like shopping—except you’re “shopping” your own stuff. Ask yourself:
  • Do I use this?
  • Does it make cooking easier?
  • Is it something I only need seasonally?
You might notice you have duplicates or things you forgot you even owned, which makes it easier to let a few things go.
Make piles for anything you don’t want to keep—one for donating, one for selling, and one for tossing if needed. Keep everything grouped by category so the next step is a breeze.

🥤🥤Sort and Store by Category
Once you’ve sorted out the things you no longer want, go ahead and move those piles out of the way. Seasonal items can go into bins with your holiday or seasonal décor, and everything else you’re keeping should be things you actually use. This is where being honest with yourself really pays off.
Now you’re left with the items that do belong in your kitchen. Grab some Post‑It notes or scraps of paper—we’re going to label your cabinets and drawers before putting anything away. Write one category per note, then stick each note on the cabinet or drawer where you think those items should live.
A little trick I love: pretend you’re unloading the dishwasher. Where would you naturally put the plates? The cups? The glasses? Stick the notes where it feels right.
Then pretend you’re cooking. Where would you reach for a spatula or a whisk? Where would you want your pots and pans? Label those spots too.
Once everything is labeled, you can start putting things away. Since we’re not using any fancy organizers here, just place items in the drawers or cabinets you chose. If you already have silverware trays or old drawer organizers tucked away somewhere, feel free to use them. And if you decluttered a ton, you might not need anything at all.
In the end, put things where they make the most sense for you and how you move around your kitchen. I’ve got more tips coming up to help you store everything in a way that feels natural and easy.

🏠Work With What You’ve Got
While I absolutely love pretty bins and organizing containers, sometimes the timing, the budget, or the space just isn’t right for buying anything new. And honestly, most of the time you already have plenty of things around the house that work perfectly for organizing your kitchen without spending a dime.
You probably already have a silverware holder—use it! Not every drawer or cabinet needs a fancy organizer to function well.
For example, instead of buying anything new, we simply lowered the shelves for plates and cups so they were easier to reach. If your shelves are adjustable, move them around until they make sense for you. And if you have cabinets that are the same size, you can even borrow a shelf from one to add more space in another.
When it comes to cups, glasses, and water bottles, lining them up in neat rows keeps everything tidy and easy to grab.
Do the same with spices—line them up in rows, keeping the ones you use most often in the front and the less-used ones toward the back. Store small appliances together, and tuck their parts inside the appliance itself. For example, keep all the food processor blades inside the bowl so everything stays together and nothing gets lost.
Tupperware is another great “use what you already have” option. If you’ve got a container missing a lid (and who doesn’t), use it to corral kitchen gadgets, small appliance parts, or water bottle lids. It works surprisingly well.

Bonus Tips for Organizing on a Zero Budget
Here are a few extra tricks that can make a big difference when you’re organizing your kitchen. Some of them might sound a little funny at first—I’ve definitely had people laugh when I bring them up—but they work. Try a few and see what feels right for you.

🖐🏻🤚🏻Are You Righty or Lefty?
This is always the first thing I think about because it actually changes how a kitchen should be set up. If you’re left‑handed, you naturally reach for things differently than someone who’s right‑handed. That means your kitchen might work better if certain things are flipped from the “typical” layout. Set things up so you can grab what you need with the hand you use most. It makes everyday tasks so much easier.

📦Tupperware
I’m a big fan of storing Tupperware with the lids on. I know it’s not everyone’s favorite method, but it keeps drawers tidy and stops the whole “where did that lid go” situation.
If you really don’t like storing them with lids on, then keep all the lids together and all the containers together—but only put a container away once you’ve found its matching lid. That alone can solve the missing‑lid mystery.

📻Small Appliances + Kitchen Gadgets
Keeping all the parts with the appliance they belong to is a game‑changer. If you have a rice cooker, store the scoopers inside it. If you have a food processor with a bunch of pieces, and they don’t all fit inside the base, use a Tupperware container or a small box to hold the extra parts. Keep that container right behind or next to the appliance so everything stays together. No more hunting for missing blades or attachments.

🔶Corner Cabinets
Corner cabinets… the troublemakers of the kitchen. They love to collect clutter. The best way to stop that is to give them one clear purpose. Use the whole space for pots and pans, or dedicate it entirely to baking items. Just don’t mix a bunch of categories in there. When a corner cabinet has a single job, it stays neat instead of becoming a black hole.

Conclusion: You don’t need fancy bins or expensive containers to have a beautifully organized kitchen. You can create a space that works for you without spending anything at all. Start by clearing everything out and giving yourself a clean slate. Sort, declutter, and label your cabinets and drawers with simple Post‑It notes so you can map out where things should go.
Put items back in the spots that feel the most natural and logical for how you cook and move around your kitchen. And remember—nothing is permanent. If something doesn’t feel right, change it. Maybe your spices need to be closer to the stove. Maybe your mixing bowls belong on a lower shelf. Keep tweaking until the space truly supports the way you live.
Your kitchen should work for you, not the other way around.

Design Inspiration Without the Penthouse Price (12/15/25)

My focus is on real rooms, with real updates that make a visible difference. A fresh coat of paint, a repurposed lamp, or a yard-sale mirror transformed with spray paint can feel like a total makeover. I believe in saving money, reusing what’s available, and proving that creativity—not a luxury budget—is what truly transforms a home.
